Learning from each other and acting together: Rethinking provenance research on Nazism and colonialism

Haus Bastian - Centre for Cultural Education, Am Kupfergraben 10, 10117 Berlin

16. 11. 2026

18:00 - 20:00

In the final meeting, we will once again look at possible synergy effects between mediation and provenance research, broadening the historical frame of reference. Dr. Sven Haase, provenance researcher at the Central Archive of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz, and Dr. Patrick Helber, curator for education and mediation at the Humboldt Forum, will report on their research and mediation projects dealing with the interfaces of the Nazi era and colonialism.
Subsequently, they discuss the differences and similarities between provenance research and mediation from a transhistorical perspective. How can a fruitful intertwining be achieved in the respective disciplines? What should be taken into account in this process? What can be learned from the discussions about colonial looted art for the public debate? What mistakes should not be repeated? What differences exist between the historical contexts, and how can or should they be thought of in a democratizing way? The conversation is moderated by the historical-political artist and cultural mediator Dr. Lilja-Ruben Çaharnas Vowe.
