As a consequence of the Reichstag fire, the Reich President's Decree for the Protection of People and State was issued on 28 February 1933. This decree made it possible, amongst other things, to suspend fundamental rights and to imprison political opponents of the Nazi regime and ideologically undesirable persons without trial. Those affected were taken to concentration camps. The duration of imprisonment varied greatly, from a few days to several months. The prisoners themselves had to bear the costs of their accommodation.
