A young man from Hanover, whose parents had been affected by the violent mass deportations of Jews of Polish nationality, had shot the diplomat vom Rath in Paris on 7 November 1938. When he died of his injuries two days later, violent mobs swept through villages and towns across the German Reich, looting and destroying Jewish shops and homes and setting synagogues alight.
